Legacies of Chemical Warfare in Vietnam

Friday, October 14, 2011

Vietnam War scholar Fred Wilcox talks about the effects of chemical warfare on the Vietnamese people and their environment. Even today, more than 3 million people—including 500,000 children—are sick and dying from birth defects, cancer, and other illnesses that can be directly traced to Agent Orange/dioxin exposure. Scorched Earth: Legacies of Chemical Warfare in Vietnam, the first book to examine long-term consequences of chemical warfare there, and the effects on future generations.

Though intellectually we all know the chemicals used during the Vietnam war affected both the environment and the people in Vietnam, it would be really nice to see more about how it hurt our troops and their offspring as well as their families. The fact is our troops who served in Vietnam, as in most groups in any society, are/were good men and women and now have had to suffer the consequences of serving their country by hearing about all the bad things done during a war our government sent them to. Want people like Mr. Wilcox to write a book about us and speak about us for a change.

A belated comment from a long-time admirer of Fred's and proponent of his work for all of us since the early 1980's. We, of the Vietnam generation, owe Fred Wilcox a debt we can never repay for a task he took upon himself all those years ago; and, for which he never benefited financially; but, during which he made life-long friends.

It amazes me that we can look at past wars and see all the harm we have done while trying to defend that country or countries. Then we look at what harm we have done to their future generations and yes I believe we have done harm to them. Then the question comes, what harm have we done to our soldiers or our children and future generations? Our government will not even entertain looking into that question. As a combat Veteran of Vietnam, I have health issues that are directly from Agent Orange, my two children both have medical conditions that I and many others are as a result of my exposure. Yet when we approach the Government we are told they are not on the approved list of conditions which is only spina bifada.

Agent Orange Legacy from http://www.agentorangelegacy.com

Agent Orange Legacy represents the children of American Vietnam veterans suffering from the intergenerational effects of agent orange. Although there is some information available about this topic it is very limited. We hope that the children and grandchildren effected will finally have a voice. AO legacy is a vehicle for the children and grandchildren to finally speak out and we will advocate on their behalf. We also appreciate how Dr. Wilcox connected the issues of the day with the mis-use of dangerous chemicals. This is especially important. So many Americans want to forget the Vietnam war and agent orange. If they look at the children/grandchildren of Vietnam veterans they will see what the future holds for their children for generations to come. It is a painful and bleak future. Thank you for your dedication and work Dr. Wilcox. Thanks also goes to Leonard Lopate and WNYC for addressing the continuing legacy of agent orange. Sharon Perry, Founder

MSgt Foster Guam Congresswoman Madeline Bordallo supports this petition for a full investigation immediately into WHERE AND WHEN AGENT ORANGE WAS USED OUTSIDE OF VIETNAM TO INCLUDE GUAM

http://www.guamagentorange.info/home

Thousands of military dependent children that were on Andersen AFB Guam are ill and all of the female military dependents have had multiple late term miscarriages, still births, birth defects, etc. Many american babies are buried on guam born with no brains. Guam has the highest TCDD Dioxin soil contamination in the world at 19,000 PPM.

Have there been birth defects in children of American soldiers who have returned from Vietnam that are attributed to agent orange?

Sorry i came in late, please ask the guest if he knows the total amount, in tons, of ALL the different color agents. The Army had Agent Orange, yellow, red, etc. multiple color codes for multiple agents. The total amount is so huge, it could be the cause of the Avian Flu virus

Was the later case (brought on behalf of Vietnamese) randomly assigned to Judge Weinstein? Despite judicial efficiency concerns, it seems absurd to have let him hear the later case.

My uncle served in Vietnam, where one of his jobs was cleaning helicopters. When he returned, he suffered from a series of mysterious symptoms and illnesses ending in his death in his 30s of a aneurysm. My family has always suspected Agent Orange.

I like the way he glossed over the use of Agent Orange by the VC. While I get it and find this disturbing, dont paint only one side as the monster.

Psyops is still going strong today. Walter Isaacson, idolized as an American hagiographer, allowed psyops people to work in the _newsroom_ at CNN.

Leonard, the humans most heavily exposed to dioxin are, obviously, those who worked in the chemical factories that made the herbicides in which it is an impurity (Monsanto Nitro WV, Diamond Shamrock NJ, Germany etc.), where the reactors exploded, and civilian population living in the vicinity of a manufacturing plant in Seveso Italy where a reactor exploded. As far as I know, the only disease attributed with certainty to the exposure was severe chloracne, a horrible condition, but not deadly.

I wish this toxic topic got more coverage. We spend all this time and money treating the symptoms but the not the problems.

Can you ask your guest about incidents of: autism, asthma, increased allergies, obesity in children there?

A correction, Leonard. Your guest's first book about Agent Orange was WAITING FOR AN ARMY TO DIE, not "Waiting for An Enemy to Die," as you stated in your intro.
