Robert Askins discusses writing “Hand to God,” which stars Steven Boyer and Geneva Carr. Christian Puppet Ministries are normally a great way to teach children about the Bible, but in this play children can be fooled by Satan’s tricks—even within the sanctuary of the Christian Puppet Ministry of Cypress, Texas, the devil lurks. “Hand to God” is playing at Ensemble Studio Theatre through December 18.

Great conversation nevertheless. Surprised (and grateful) that the WNYC moderators posted my message. A reminder of how much I love this station, and Leonard's show...
Anne, I missed hearing the statement you asked about, but knowing Leonard's sense of humor, I'd guess it was a joke about the number of characters rather than how many actual people were in the studio.

Curious though about why your producer would have had worries about the number of people in the studio. Did your previous segment not have 3 guests (the Asuncion cast)?
I'm wondering and I hope this is my Connecticut cynicism kicking in -- if your producer was "nervous" as you said, because she thought Tyrone (as his name would suggest) was a Black man and not the puppet he turned out to be. It just seemed strange that there were space limitations brought up.
In all the years I've listened to the Leonard Lopate, I'd never known that space was such a constraint on your show and its production. The veneer of intelligent radio had somehow made me imagine the Leonard Lopate studio to be a swank and princely place. I'm hoping that the thoughts + sentiments of Leonard's staff are as elevated + high-minded as the conversation he moderates (and the posh digs he "occupies").
Saw it. Good play great cast and with a first class puppeteer. Elmo better watch out.
