Lynn Nottage talks about her critically acclaimed comedy, “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark,” which stars Sanaa Lathan. The play draws upon the screwball films of the 1930s to take a funny and irreverent look at racial stereotypes in Hollywood. “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark” is playing through June 12 at Second Stage Theatre.

When I was Director of the Hasbrouck Heights, (NJ) Public Library, one of my favorite patrons was Vera Stark. She would come in with her daughter, Anita, and by time the "Stark Women" left we had tears in our eyes from laughing so hard. And the rum balls she gave us at Christmas were truly intoxicating...REALLY, I don't think we should have driven our cars after eating one. She passed away in her 90's, still charming the staff with her one liners.
All this is prologue to ask, where did the author come up with the name Vera Stark?
