James Gleick discusses how information has become the modern era’s defining quality and the vital principle of our world. The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood looks at how we got to the current information age and where we are heading. It tells the story of information, explains how information technologies have changed the nature of human consciousness, and he writes of the key figures in the development of our modern understanding of information.

Although I have not finished the book The Information by James Gleick, I remembered an article claiming that Geneticists John Harding and James Colin proved scientifically that the chicken came before the egg. The article was around July, 2010. If true, doesn't this proof debunk all of Richard Dawkins theory that humans, et al are simply servo robots for the replication processes of genes? Thus, the genes are the replication servants of the organisms, correct?
Please answer if you can, and also what is James Gleick's response to this.
Thank you,'

Perhaps your guest meant to indicate that the OED entry runs approximately 94,000 words, not 9,400 as he said. 9,400 words do not a short novel make.
your guest is wrong about lps
cd's may have the potential for being the same warmth of lps but they rarely do
a simple a b comparision between a early pressing of a miles davis lp vs a cd will make you understand how lps are better
Gleick's book has been widely praised, but it is fundamentally derivative or, at best, accumulative. Nothing original here. For Babbage, see Hugh Kenner, for example. For much else, see Hofstader, Dennet, et al. Good popularizer, I guess.
There is information carried on Vinyl recordings that is not carried on cd's. This does effect our listening experience. There are high frequencies absent that cause subharmonics which effects our listening experience.
Presently looking for an Article by Walter Sear to back up this up.
Thanks!
Will we run out of hard drive space for the content on the internet, as that content grows exponentially?
Shall we start stocking the moon with servers? : D
Isn't musical notation an early form of digital storage?
Philosophical comment:
The number of images that can be displayed on any of our flat screen displays is a FINITE number. VERY large!
Meaning: ALL knowledge exists.
The key information that the world is being told about today is May 21, 2011: Judgment Day. It is God who has provided the means today that the whole world is to be warned.
Leonard, I'm sure you're aware of Family Radio, just beside the dial to NPR at 94.7 FM. From May 11th to May 15th, there is a caravan of RV vehicles coming to the city that are "wrapped" with this message on them, accompanied by many people on foot.
I hope yourself, and WNYC, won't be sleeping on this
Japanes has alphabets. Not only characters as Chinese.
I've been told that some huge percentage of the total 'data' or 'information' on the internet has been created in the last two years. Is this true, and do you see a continued exponential explosion of data in the world?
The phrase "the information" reminds me of "the knowledge" which all London cab drivers have to know.
