I bought a few bottles of Ms. Catena's malbec several years ago. It was a revelation, a superb wine. It's delightful to hear her speak.
As the guest of an artist living in a small itallian village, I saw my host pour a small amount of (presumably olive) oil into the bottle after pouring, to fend of the air. It was a red table wine.

I visited her family winery while in Argentina, and their Malbec-Malbec is one of THE BEST wines I have ever tasted! I wish they would export it.
Argentinian wine is not only very good, it is a great buy. I have been buying it for several years. Some of the more common varieties are grown there, as well as Malbec. (I have a Mendoza Chardonnay in the fridge and a Merlot on a shelf. Both are very smooth and refined, but with excellent fruit tastes.) Cabernet is also available. Prices are under $10 for 1.5 L.
My husband and I went to Mendoza (among other places) for our honeymoon and loved it. The weather was spectacular, the scenery majestic and the food and wine amazing! We also visited the Catena winery and very much enjoyed it. We are now complete converts to Argentine wine. Some of the best in the world. (And like Argentines we drink a lot of wine.) We travel a lot and Argentina is our favorite place. We can't understand why more people don't visit this gorgeous country.

I buy this cheap-in-price but very good Syrah from Mendoza,
and, drinking much but not knowing much...
I'd like to know what characteristics (climate et cetera) a region must have to harvest and make
certain wines. (Like, what are the characteristics of Mendoza to produce this fine Syrah?)
Can you elaborate on Pinot also?
...and, how is the competition w/ Chile goin?
