“James X”
Thursday, December 15, 2011
Playwright/performer Gerard Mannix Flynn talks about the U.S. premiere of “James X.” An Irish government tribunal of inquiry into institutions responsible for cruel and inhumane treatment of children is in session. In the foyer, James X, one of those children, now a man, anxiously prepares to offer the testimony which he hopes will unshackle him from the past. “James X” is playing at 45 Bleecker Street.

I didn't catch which one of the guests talked about how a person's status ("sinner," Jew, black) has been used to justify abuse, but it reminded me of the reports that predators kidnapped children after the Indian Ocean tsunami & other disasters. They didn't need an excuse, just an opportunity. We need to find ways to anticipate these crimes--in all contexts--& prevent them as much as possible.
I thank Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson and Mannix Flynn for bringing this important play to New York.
I was raised in an industrial school in Ireland, as were my 14 siblings. Not one of us escaped being abused, be it physical, sexual, psychological or emotional.
I saw the play on opening night and was greatly moved by it.
Is there any further news about the run of the show being extended?
Really looking forward to this interview. "James X" sounds amazing. I hope I can see it during its short run. Mr. Byrne is a busy person! Please ask him about his upcoming film "All Things To All Men"; when can we expect to see that on this side of the pond?
