Underreported Update: Oil, Ecuador, and Investigative Journalism

Thursday, May 20, 2010

In his film Crude: The Real Price of Oil, documentarian Joe Berlinger chronicled the story behind a law suit filed by thousands of indigenous Ecuadorians against Chevron for oil pollution in the Amazon river. Earlier this month, a New York judge ordered him to turn over hundreds of hours of outtake footage from the film to Chevron.

We’ll talk to Mr. Berlinger about the ruling and what it could mean for journalists.

Just to make a correction, the subjugation of indigenous people did not start with Columbus, humans have always taken over land from others that has been settled for many thousands of years. Even in the Americas, waves of human migration erased previous, 'indigenous' cultures.

Burning petroleum is to the earth what smoking tobacco is to our lungs. It is killing the planet. For every imaginable reason possible, we MUST get off oil and onto renewables regardless of the short term economic difficulties that will cause. Getting off smoking wasn't easy, and getting off petroleum isn't either -but is absolutely a MUST if we are to have a living planet to pass down to our grandchildren!
