Thursday, May 20, 2010
Alex Matthiessen, president of Riverkeeper, gives us an update on the Newtown Creek oil spill.
It’s the worst domestic oil spill in United States history and it happened right here in New York City. We’ll find out about efforts to clean up the spill and the environmental impact it’s had on Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

millions of gallons of oil spilled at Newtown Creek...(?)
on a "55" acre site (?)
How many acres there have been, potentially, contaminated...?
When I was a kid, my neighbor, a backyard auto mechanic, told me 1 quart of oil, spilled, would contaminate acres of land.
WITH MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF OIL SPILLED INTO THE CREEK AND LEACHING INTO THE SOIL...
what is the real level of contamination...?
Don't ask.
Don't tell.
Alex Mathiessen was so helpful in the making of our VBS.tv documentary "Toxic Brooklyn" which focused, in part, on the sad state of Newtown Creek. Kudos to Riverkeeper.
