Council houses are the Brit equivalent of projects. In the 80's Margaret Thatcher promoted the idea of people buying their council homes if they wanted to, if they qualified.

Hello .. I am a Brit. I can help explain. Council houses are traditionally along the lines of the public housing. They are generally managed by the local councils e.g. city local govt whereby an individual rents a property from the council. There have been situations where council house residents have been able to buy the houses they originally rented from the council.

Hi Leonard-
OK, it's not directly relevant to your conversation, but the term "council house" came up. I hear that term from Brits all the time. It seems to NOT be directly equivalent to our "public housing" since I've heard of people buying their council houses. "Please explain" :-)
