Hello,
In 1935 Hollywood Movie Director Raoul Walsh directed a movie call "Under Pressure" with Victor Mc Laglen. My father had a scene in it as an "Extra". His youngest sister was married (then) to Raoul. It was all about the Sand Hogs in NY. I still can`t find any copies of the movie. Several were destroyed in a Film Vault fire many years ago.
Sincerely, Barbara
And, yes, my father would slay me for getting the Local number wrong. Of course, it's 147. I don't think my father ever missed a Local meeting in New York. as for the other old timers, hats off to my father's friends, especially Johnny Curran, Martin O'Hara and Ed Cross.
Yes, I am the very proud Grand-daughter, Daughter, Sister and MOTHER of a New York City Sandhog Local 147. I do know how hard they work and they all have a very special place in my heart as well as in the hearts of those they love
There's no one like them.
Well, I'd like to share the following with you all: my sister, Mary Ann Reilly (nee McCluskey) is the granddaughter, daughter, sister and mother of a NYC Sandhog! How's that for a family tradition? Long live the Hogs and 127. They actually make it happen for the rest of New Yorkers.
It surprises me no one mentioned the 1943 movie "No Time for Love". It starred Fred MacMurray as the beefy Irish Sandhog playing opposite Claudette Colbert- the photographer going underground to shoot the sand hog experience.
I did happen to know what a Sandhog is. A friend of mine from West New York , N.J. worked as one back when I knew him in 1977. Are you still out there John?
Gina can be forgiven as she is so young but I'm surprised that you didn't seen to recall that NY Daily News columnist Jummy Breslin wrote a novel about sandhogs (one chapter per day) which was published day by day back in the 80s. Here's a link:

BTW - great show as usual!
ap
The History Channel series about the Sandhogs was really amazing, for anyone who missed it. Download it on ITunes, or buy it on the History website. Incredible. Far more comprehensive than just one book.
This is no less amazing of a project as the Roman aqueducts and almost know body knows about it.
Oh, please read Colum McCann.
The Bronx is gneiss and Manhattan is full of schist.
Congratulations on the book, Gina! What effects are the sandhogs feeling from the recent embezzlement arrest of their pension manager?
I've known what a "sandhog" was since the early '80's when I lived up in Spring Valley NY. My neighbor was one.
Milt and his wife Mabel were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Milt and I always helped each other on projects on our homes.
Other than that, I can't offer any insights to the trade.
My uncle was a Sand-hog. He helped build the subways many many years ago. He was an Irish American from County Cavan, Ireland. Hooray for the Sand-hogs!
Leonard, most people don't know much of anything about what makes our world what/how it is. So stop with the frivolous question.
