Dilip Hiro looks at the new century’s emerging power politics and considers how they might rearrange our world order. In After Empire: The Birth of a Multipolar World, he looks at the historic shifts that have undermined America’s position as the world’s sole superpower and have created a new global order where America’s moral, economic, and military leadership will be challenged.

John - The office? Or 'The Office'. Which ever, not a very BUSY office.
He's hard to understand, but once I stopped "multi-tasking" and really listened, I appreciated his comments more. I'm sure his book will be an informative read.
I think his commentary is quite cogent in spite of the negative comments from the previous writers. I have read other books on this subject and his comments are right in line with those. He is well read, and thinks clearly.
One barely are able to understand what this guy is saying. Really annoying!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that China's atrocious rights record goes unchallenged for several reasons:
1. The Chinese just don't care what others think.
2. China is too powerful for any nation to challenge it.
3. China has never contended that it is a great champion of rights.
4. China is not rampaging around the world, trampling the rights of others while simultaneously maintaining that it is championing those very same rights.
The US had an awful rights record in Southeast Asia and in Central and South America. The US didn't really care, US media ignored it, and the US was too powerful for anyone to do anything about it.
The US still has a poor record, but it is no longer as powerful as it used to be BUT it STILL insists that it is the world's most wonderful nation, the greatest defender of rights, etc. China has never done this.
"Where's the beef?" That just about sums up this segment.
I can't believe this guy just said "Where's the beef?" This guy clearly has no idea what he's talking about. I completely agree with #4. Please wrap up this terrible interview and move on.
I'm a programmer and I just want to say that this person has obviously not consulted with anyone knowledgeable in developing his theory about "cyber warfare".
Internet cracking falls into two categories: subterfuge (penetration) and denial of service (DoS). DoS attacks are the ones you hear about where a government or other site may be shut down briefly. It's important to understand that DoS *DOES NOT AND CANNOT* include penetration, that is, a breach of security whereby information can be gleaned by the attacker, or the attacker can "take control" of some involved system. All they can do is force the site "off air" by overwhelming the servers.
Clandestine penetration attacks can glean information, but they cannot occur simultaneous to DoS attacks, and activity less passive than surveillance (such as "taking control") is doomed to failure. "Cyber-warfare" in that sense is impossible and should be reserved for sci-fi and Chicken Little.
The bi-polar era was created as the result of WWII, but the return to the more natural multipolar world is the result of the downfall of Communism that the US had spearheaded. And with it came the restoration of capitalism in the former Soviet bloc, China and India. However that created an unanticipated tsunami of 3 billion communist slaves now being freed to produce, consume and compete once again. Manufacturing predominance quickly returned to East Asia after a five century hiatus. All the natural competitive advantages that the United States had had for the last century were washed away to a large extent as a result. And so, the US has little choice but to accommodate itself to the reality of a restored multipolar world in which we are only one of many economic and military power centers.
Len, this is a terrible interview with the chuckling from the guest. Bush was not a joke and was not to be laughed at. Every year we get these false prophets who said the same thing in the 80's about Japan. This man is not a scholar.
VIET NAME DID OVEREXTEND OUR ECONOMY BUT NIXON TOOK US OFF THE GOLD STANDARD TO PAY FOR THE WAR AND THAT IS WHAT SENT THE U.S. ECONOMY'S BUSINESS CYCLES INTO THE VIOLENT GYRATIONS WE HAVE KNOWN SINCE THEN - THE RESULT OF LACK OF CONTROL.
That's funny, but don't forget the west, western, the west, western, the west, western, the west, blah, blah, blah. Besides, you cant discriminate against a big part of your population [at least 25% [African & Latins] and still compete worldwide. Lots of talent is being incarcerated in an industry born out of white fear and bias and whites with middling talent and achievement are put in positions of power, making bad decisions for this country. It's your own fault.
China China China China China
BOO!
