Director Amir Bar-Lev discusses his documentary “The Tillman Story.” It tells the story of Pat Tillman, a professional football player who left the NFL to join the Army Rangers in 2002 and became an instant symbol of patriotic fervor and unflinching duty. When the government tried to turn his death into propaganda, Pat’s mother led the family’s crusade to reveal the truth beneath the mythology of their son’s life and death. “The Tillman Story” opens Friday, August 20, at the AMC Lincoln Square Cinema and Sunshine Landmark Cinema.

"The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom."

I think lecturing and berating his potential audience will not help his case, and I suggest he modify his rhetoric. After all, a documentary that is given an art cinema release several years after the event, can hardly be viewed as an urgent call to arms. In the meantime, this pleb will wait for Netflix.
Israeli men serve 3 years minimum! i don't think mr. bar lev's nationality in any way affects the facts of this story - which are pretty fantastic
seems they're prosecuting Roger Clemens (I've never been a fan) for lying but it's ok for the lies the government made up in the Lynch and Tillman case......
Surely the R rating also does political work. Certainly, when that vile little censor Jack Valenti would probably have forced an NC-17 on it.
Maybe Mr.Amir Ben-lev can go to Isreal and tear down that military. Oh no, the IDF is a wonderous institution. Only the US has faults.
I would bet 100 bucks Mr. Ben Lev, served his year in the IDF.
Bravo, Amir Bar-Lev -- you have summed up perfectly why the truth about American war crimes or Wall Street or Health Insurers or mine disasters -- you name it -- does indeed get out, but fails to sway broad public opinion.
All militaries seek propaganda.
I understand, that the job of the press is to tear down the military and embarrass the country. But Propaganda has always been involved in all wars.
Len, how about a postive military story about some wounded veterans.
Didn't Mr. Lopate have someone on just a week or two ago who claimed that the press did _nothing_ wrong -- nothing at all -- in the Jessica Lynch fiasco?
There are so many great documentaries out there, like this one, but if they are not put on
television, they reach a very small audience.
I certainly hope this one will get a broader viewing eventually.
While the coverup was improper, I wonder if Len would give this story the time of day if it were not anti military and if it was a true heroic American story. No he would not.
Wasn't Pat Tillman fragged for his criticism of the war?
Jon Krakauer's book ("Where Men Win Glory") about Pat Tillman and the military cover-up of his death is an excellent read.
The rolling stone general (McChrystal) was very involved in the friendly fire coverup.
