Not a word of this is surprising to fellow teachers. Like Jennifer, I spent over $500 from my own funds every year--many years close to $1000--during my own tenure as a public school teacher.
It seems like teachers like getting attention from people who would never talk to them when they actually were in school. They finally get to be popular.
Please ask the author to relate the story about the Queens Farm (my daughter was supposed to go there yesterday).
