What Would Susie Say

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Comedienne Susie Essman talks about her journey from struggling stand-up comic to her role as Susie Greene on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, playing one of the funniest women on television. Her book, What Would Susie Say: Bullsh*t Wisdom About Love, Life and Comedy takes us behind the scenes of a life in comedy, and provides wisdom on a range of topics that she admits she's not qualified to be an authority on, including men, sports, and being a stepmother.

I always read Andrew Dice Clay's persona as a PARODY of misogyny. Never thought him funny, but I assumed it was a character he created for the stage.

Susie Greene is a genius comic creation! Definitely one of the best characters--female or otherwise--on television EVER.

I grew up in the same town as Susie. I have a vivid memory of standing in line waiting for the bell to ring, watching her - I think she was in jr. high by then, wearing a vintage coat, cool beyond her years, doing stand-up in line without even realizing it. She was outspoken, funny, charming everyone and while I wasn't in the crowd, I admired her so, and was delighted to see her - just as I would expect - still charming and amusing. Love Susie on Larry David - who would know it would remind me of Traphagen?

How funny -- as a softball coach (and now soccer) for my eight year old daughters' teams, indeed consciously had to divine my inner Susie Greene -- to deal with the bossy Jersey Moms! And I'm a dad!

Andrew Dice Clay was funny and controversal, so was lenny Bruce. Him you idolize and Clay you wish him ill. Rediculous double, politiaclly correct standard.

Everyone is a genius if you agree with them
