1880 - 1914 was only 34 years of open harbor to persecuted and hungry immigrants.
The closed gates to Jews during the Holocaust, and especially racism is chronically underestimated in American history and political science.
Meigs also built the National Buildings Museum building, originally built to process the massive Civil War vets' paperwork, and one of the 100 most-loved buildings in the US; truly a wonder to visit in DC.
actually, leonard, montgomery c meigs seized robert e lee's land after his own son (meigs' son) was bushwhacked by rebel troops
meigs blamed lee personally for the death of his son and wanted to penalize him. he immediately ordered the burial of troops in lee's wife's rose gardens on the property, beginning the use of arlington house's grounds as a military cemetary
