Look into My Eyes

Monday, June 22, 2009

The film is showing as part of the 20th International Human Rights Film Festival, at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center. More information about schedule and tickets here.

Mr. Jack from Bklyn,

From one Jew to another; please accept my apologies for the ignorant Jews that you met. Some advise, you can beat them at their own game with knowledge of your own religion. Don't mix up the religion with uniformed people; get the info from the document.

Toward the end of his interview with Naftaly Gliksberg, Leonard Lopate mentions as an aside, that Jewish academics in Europe have been being denied access to International Conferences. From where has he learnt this? Such overt discrimination would certainly be illegal and very prosecutable in most European countries.

There has however, been a call to buoycott Israeli academics from international conferences in the same way as there was an academic buoycott of South Africa. This largely unsuccessful attempt was spearheaded by the English Jewish academics Professor Rose and his wife with support from dozens of other prominent Jewish academics and the Jews for Justice campaign.

"By the way, a not well known Jewish teaching; you can be a good person if you are not Jewish & go to heaven."
Really? Every religious person I have met who is Jewish (and believe me I have met many) have said that I won't be going to heaven because I'm a secular Jew.

Can I state this: Stop using religion to prop up your own ideas. If you hate someone at least just hate them as a person and not because of their faith. Ditto with loving them.

Please, get over it. Between Iran's religious lunacy and Israel's equally apocalyptic world view it's a miracle we're not in the middle of a nuclear winter at this point.

"If the Wesleyan University shooter, Holocaust Museum shooter, West Virginia based national alliance, hateful speeches by the leader of the nation of islam, genocidal threats by the islamic republic of iran shouldn't make Jews paranoid, what should?"
Who said those aren't valid things to be afraid of? Those folks are to be feared.

But this film and Naftaly Gliksberg feed off of real fears to create fake ones. More to the point: Take a broader view of the anti-Semites in Europe and other places and realize they are just filled with hate.

You know what paranoia fuels? It fuels utter gargbage like the entrapment of a bunch of semi-functional loons in Newburgh and somehow people patting themselves on the back for "stopping terror"...

How about this for a thought: Imagine if anti-Terror efforts went into going after all of the hate acts you describe and not be wasted on fueling the delusional dreams of idiots who would have never done what they did without the help of those who finally caught them.

The Jewish people have a great/rich culture. But paranoia and calling any critic an "anti-Semite" is not something to be admired. Enough with this B.S. Fight the real issues and real hate.

How many saints received their strips in the middle ages inciting against Jews? are they still saints? All Jews are going to hell. There is more to be said.

By the way, a not well known Jewish teaching; you can be a good person if you are not Jewish & go to heaven. What other religion can say ditto?

Why would or should anyone thing that racism and antisemitism would ever or could ever disappear? My mother, a Holocaust survivor, would say, "Times may change, but people don't." Love is ephemeral, but hate is forever. That is the why the morality books, such as the Bible, preach love - because hate is the norm, the default state. Hate is easy but love is hard work.

Jose, I will say this to balance out that ridiculous "that's just what he said in public." My parents were excited when Pope John Paul II’s papacy began. They are Polish and felt a tad of national pride despite the religious differences. And they took notice when he made positive gestures towards the Jewish community. And if they were alive in 1994 (they passed away in 1993) I think they would be very happy that he formally announced the connection between the Jewish community and Catholicism.

Yes, we know the Catholic church has some more growing to do. But for my parents whose lives where utterly devastated thanks to true anti-Semitism, the fact the head of the Catholic church acknowledged that Jews were simply valid meant a lot.

For people specifically upset wit Naftaly Gliksberg. Don't get too upset. I've heard paranoia mongers like this my whole life. Won't go see the film because life is simply too short to spend listening to yet another schmuck reinforce the idea that "they are all out to get us...."

Please, get out more often Mr. Gliksberg. Not everyone wants to hunt you down.

If all races non white joined forces with all religions non Christian, you’d give the Christian white folk more then a run for their money. But all these groups as a whole choose to hate each other just as much as the white man hates them. There is something very powerful that all races and religions have in common, hatred and the resistance to try and understand what we don’t know about groups that we are not a part of.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest it's not going to get a theatrical release in West Virginia.

Mr. Gliksberg, when cahllenged by Leonard 0n his outrageous slurs against Pope John Paul II's condemnations against hatred of Jews, blithely responds : well maybe "that's just what he said in public."
What precisely does this sleazy bottomfeeder mean to imply with that nasty remark?
I was willing to hear him out, until he proved that he's a hateful scapegoater himself. If antisemitism is wrong, is any anti-Catholicism less so?

Wait, that's the end of the segment? No calls or comments read? I'm genuinely disappointed, WNYC.

Is it anti-semitic to acknowledge there are under 16 millions Jewish people worldwide and over 5 billion non-Jews?

Your example about West Virginia, the whole state mind you and your ease of saying "The Blacks" even though you caught and corrected yourself, makes me no long sympathetic to your cause! Clearly Jews are PC incorrect too.

Anti-semitism exists and won't go away because hate and racism still exists and won't go away.

That said, I'm a child of Holocaust survivors who has witnessed and been a victim of anti-Semitism in my life and through the prism of my parent's life and must say this:
There also exists a ton of paranoia in the Jewish world where people want to see anti-Semitism anywhere/everywhere. Fighting hate is one thing. Creating a witch hunt is another. Please, fear-mongers exist on both sides and while not as bad as most, I feel that Naftaly Gliksberg is feeding the self-defeating fear that has haunted Judaism for centuries.

I would appreciate it if Mr. Gliksberg would present his evidence that no one -- literally no one -- in West Virginia knows what the phrase "P.C." means.

I think they have heard of PCness and some choose not to use anything other than what they are familiar terms they have been using or have heard their family use their whole lives.

Anti-Semitism is simply holding Jews and Israeli do a different standard then everyone else. Unfortunately, WNYC, the New York Times and many others do this.

I can’t wait to hear this segment. Just look at WNYC. Every time Israel fires a gun it seems that WNYC runs a series of shows asking if the UN should intervene. Yet countries like Iran, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Rwanda, Sudan, China and Russia brutalize and massacre their own people, but WNYC does not ask guests if the UN should intervene with these countries and conflicts. When Israel gets in a conflict, WNYC and others ask if Israel is being “proportional.” But no other country, not the United States, Britain, China, etc. are asked to respond to terrorism and violence proportionally. I give WNYC lots of credit for having this topic on, but will WNYC have the courage to look at its own policies and practices? I hope so.
