Is Alvin Ailey still getting money from Philip Morris? BAM too? Will officials continue to testify in support of Philip Morris, and take part in its events, as they did in 1991 and even during the NYC smoking ban hearings in 2002?
Are artists excused from morality?
William Dobbs of Act-Up's New York chapter said it best: that taking money from a cigarette company was like "stepping over thousands of dead" to help AIDS victims.
"Is [your donation] linked to the people you kill every year?" he asked a Philip Morris VP.
Note that blacks die of lung cancer at a greater rate than whites.
Tobacco largesse will forever be a blot on any arts organization's history.
Those touched by the ravages of tobacco will never forget who helped in the ongoing destruction of lives around the world.
