In the spirit of Brian Aldiss' appropriated title for the show, are the works in the show 'essays in the familiar?'
The flip perspective might be the lack of New Yorkers knowledge of Governors Island - it could be seen as what most residents consider a familiar city suddenly made strange....
Did these contexts influence the curators in their choice of works?
This is NOT the first art exhibit on Governor's Island- the island has been pushing art for the last couple of years. There has been a festival for interactive art the last two summers (Figment Festival- the best weekend of fun in NYC), a show of participatory art last summer (Emergence), shows of the Sculptor's guild the last few summers, olafur eliasson's waterfall last summer, A show by the well-known photographer, Lisa Kereszi, and art fair by the Four Heads Collective, and public art project called "City of Dreams," and more.....
Governors Island is also home to a sustainable farm, as of this summer.
