Jim Lynch's new novel Border Songs examines the strange culture of a US-Canada border town through the character Brandon Vanderkool, a dyslexic six-foot-eight border agent who is unusually adept at spotting drug smugglers and illegal immigrants.

The Boundary Waters region in northern Minnesota allows repeatedly border crossings with Canada without any oversight. This vast wilderness has a completely open border. This is a very popular paddling area for canoes. It is virtually impossible to monitor the entirety.
