Susan Squire gives us a history of marriage from a contrarian’s perspective – from Adam and Eve, to the Renaissance, to modern ideas of love matches. Her new book is I Don’t.
I think that the author has a truly amazing wealth of knowledge. I wished that Lenny would stop and listen and let her fully answer one question before hitting her with another tangentially related question. Sorry Lenny. The subject matter could easily take up an hour. Invite her back, she's quite knowledgeable. I like her style too. Very focused. Does not suffer fools.

many species form monogamous, life long pair-bonds. i thought that humans had merely formalized what had emerged naturally because monogamy does not come as naturally to us :)

Wow, what a defensive author w/a peculiarly narrowly prescribed study. Her last comment about being "wrinkly" is case in point. Seems like she has been watching too much Sex in the City.

Oh, there's more to the Genesis story. God told Adam not to *eat* from the tree, but Adam told Eve not to even *touch* it! So when she touched it & didn't die, she could have doubted the prohibition against eating it too.
And if the 1st commandment given was "Be fruitful & multiply," it was given to animals (fish & birds, anyway) before it was given to humans, on the 5th day of Creation. (BTW, there are 613 commandments by Maimonides' count, but it could be 631 by some other way of counting.)

The common belief is that marriage exists to establish a presumption of paternity -- children born inside the marriage are presumed to "belong" to the husband. Assuming this is true, it does not explain the essence of marriage, which is that women are slaves and belong to the man, who is the person with the money. Women must do as they are told. The women's rights are non-existent or curtailed. The man may tell her what to do, give or not give her any money, what to wear, what to say or whether to speak, what to believe. She is to clean, cook, run the house, errands. He may be violent in enforcing his rights. Women are slaves and in today's world are also decorations to enhance men's status.
And for this women get what? (Really). "Protection" against other men in the world who would also like to brutalize, use, and control the women. It's like a protection racket. Not much in it (really) for women. If women earned equal wages, and other discrimination was eliminated, you'd see a lot fewer second marriages by women.
Certainly there are good marriages. But with institutional inequality, nationwide discrimination, demeaning and degrading of women and their capabilities, ignoring their contributions and writing them out of history, it's never really an equal relationship.

Was marriage traditionally really all about children, as your guest just said, since that is a very modern reason used against same sex marriage, or was it really about property rights and coalition building? If so, please ask her to further explain.
