Annie Proulx story "Tits-Up in a Ditch" in the June 8, 2008 issue of The New Yorker (great title, yes?). Ms. Proulx captures, in her inimitable style, the life of a small-town woman who enlists in the Army and goes to Iraq. It's the kind of story-telling that stays w/ the reader.
Leni Zumas' story "The Everything Hater" was my favorite short that I read this year. She's a creative writing professor at Hunter College and her first book came out this year on Open City. For the first time in a long time, I found myself trying to read the book as slowly as possible to stave off its end. Highly recommended.
