The longest-serving inmate in the United States prison system is William Heirens, also known as the Lipstick Killer for the message left scrawled in lipstick at a crime scene. He’s been continuously incarcerated for 62 years and counting. Journalist Adam Higginbotham tells us about Heirens’s many years in prison. His article in the June GQ magazine is “The Long, Long Life of the Lipstick Killer.”

If you ignore his crimes like murdering that women and that 12 year old girl. Then he is a nice bloke,oh forgot to mention the string of burglaries he committed before the murders
I worked in the Illinois Prison System from 1974 until 1991. During that time, I was a guard in William Heirens housing unit at Vienna Corr Cntr several times. He was always very polite, not only to me but also to other inmates. He worked in the law library and helped other inmates in filing appeals etc. I never talked with Mr. Heirens at length but I had knowledge of what he was in prison for. I think every guard there knew William Heirens. When I left the IDOC in May of '91 I think he was still there. He has spent almost his entire life in prison and I doubt he will ever be released.
The Japanese surrendered in 1945. The war was over!
