When Brian Schultz was teaching in the Chicago public school system, he challenged his students from a housing project to solve a major problem in their community. The results were amazing. Schultz’s new book is Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way: Lessons from an Urban Classroom.

Hi: I heard about Brian Schultz, he's a speaker at CAB panel next week. How do I get his book? I'll try to listen to Lenny's show but don't yet know how to download stuff. My son is going to educate me sometime soon.

The reaction of the school authorities as described by Mr. Schultz reminds me of a program on PBS years ago about the patients at a nursing home in Australia who started demanding things like electric wheelchairs & a say in decisions about how they'd live at the home. The more they demanded adult levels of autonomy (& these were adults), the more the people who ran the nursing home accused them of acting like children. (The patients eventually won.)
In both cases, it seems as if the issue for those in authority is to maintain control of their charges.
