Underreported: Nanotechnology in Consumer Products

Thursday, March 13, 2008

The EPA is requiring that all products containing nanotechnology for antibacterial purposes (like nanosilver) must apply for registration by March 21, 2008. We find out what will happen to the many nanosilver-containing products currently on the market after the EPA deadline passes, and why consumers have the right to know if they’re using nanoproducts. Jennifer Sass is a nanotechnology expert and senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Follow up to Ms. Sass's reply re: colloidal silver. Label says "made of very small size <.001 microns." If I buy the expensive preparation that is not typically on a health store shelf but has to be special ordered, I do not have side effects. But the less expensive typically available prepartion I do start having side effects pretty quickly. And I am not taking for period of more than 1 week typically.

Great comments. Thanks. I do not know much about the chronic (long-term) ingestion of nanosilver, but would tend to recommend against it, though it is not acutely toxic.

As for workplace hazards, the federal agencies (OSHA and NIOSH) are researching potential exposure and hazard issues, and making workplace recommendations. How effective these are remains to be seen. The technology is far ahead of the health and safety understanding.

would records of physical inspections of plants using nanoparticles have to be available as a matter of public safety?

the handling of processing techniques are different, or atleast should be. even that sugar plant that just blew up probably hadn't been inspected properly, and that was just sugar dust.

Does the guest have any experience with or comment on ingestion of colloidal silver for medical purposes. I don't know how "nano" this product is, but I suspect the particles are very small. I have been taking this occasionally for many years. Someone is supposed to take this for a limited period of time only.
