The beautiful and mysterious "Antea" was painted in the early 1530s by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, known as Parmigianino (1503–1540). The painting is considered a masterpiece, but little is known about it – including who Antea was. The exhibit "Parmigianino's Antea: A Beautiful Artifice" is on display at the Frick Collection (1 East 70th Street) through April 27, 2008.
Colin Bailey is curator at the Frick.
