Why don't pro athletes go on to become, for example, lawyers? Because becoming a pro athlete at some point made them sacrifice their education to concentrate on their sport, probably college sometimes earlier.

The guest's argument that it has to do with humility ignores the fact that becoming a lawyer (or many of the other suggested professions) requires a lot of time in school that athletes often have forgone.

The book taboo is a leftover from a time when, often, athletes just didn't read, period. Sports and academics were almost mutually exclusive.

One of my fave Rocky Graziano quotes is:

"That guy?? He can't fight. Why, I saw him one time, he was readin' a book!"
