65 Years of Golden Books

Leonard S. Marcus, author of Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children's Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became An American Icon Along the Way, discusses a new exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (212 West 83rd Street) called “Golden Legacy: Original Art from 65 Years of Golden Books.” The exhibit features sixty masterpieces of original illustration art from America’s best loved book lines, Little Golden Books®.

In the 1950's I taught second grade in Harlem (P.S. 90 M--which no longer exists on 147th St. between 7th and 8th Aves.
Before Christmas one year, I sent a note to Golden Books telling the publisher of the financial plight of many of the children in this school. Since the majority of them owned no books, I suggested that it would be a boon to them to receive as gifts some of the Golden Books.
Shortly thereafter huge boxes of a variety of Golden Books arrived at the school! They most surely have been the first children's books to make their way into the homes of these kids, hopefully helping to spark and ever-lasting love of books.
I, surely have never forgotten Golden Books prompt and generous reply.
I still have the Golden Books of "words and pictures" purchased in the early 1950's that was used by my Chinese mother to learn to read and write English.
The musical interludes are too loud . They are totally out of whack with the spoken component of the show (which I love). They make me jump every time they come on. Brian's show doesn't have this problem.New studio?
