One of the childrens' book authors, in discussing "dropping cats on indonesia" and the DDT/malaria problem pointed out that malaria deaths had not decreased significantly from 1970-2008. Of course, the world population has doubled since 1970, so without real progress in dealing with malaria since 1970, one would expect malaria deaths to have doubled as well.
