In the 17th century, Dutch trader Van den Bogaert set out through present-day New York’s Indian territory in search of beaver pelts. His actual diary entries have been brought to life in a new graphic novel, Journey Into Mohawk Country, by writer and illustrator George O’Connor and historian Charles Gehring.

I enjoyed the interviews and I would like to read the book and learn more about the historical research project. Thanks for the serious treatment of an important subject. Early recorded impressions of First Nations communities are few and far between. Even though they are written from the European perspective, they are still invaluable, in my view.
Unfortunately no companion volume exists that tells this story from the Mohawk viewpoint-- due to the lack of written documents, if it were to exist, it would have to be a work of fiction. Maybe for my next book...
If anyone would like to check out some of the sketch work done in prep fro this book, head on over to geooco.blogpot.com and follow the links.
PS. Charly Gehring is indeed awesome.
I heard Charles Gehring speak with Russell Shorto at The New-York Historical Society and if I were wealthy I would be his patron!
I am so impressed with Charles Gehring......a great scholar and such a nice man, too!
Thanks for this interview...I'm loving it....and look forward to reading the book.
what a weird comment!
is there a companion to these books that tells the story from the mohawk perspective?
Black Robe was an awesome French Canadian movie.
