French piano giant Martial Solal has been described by critics as “astonishing,” “dazzling,” and “spellbinding,” yet he is still a secret waiting to be discovered in America due to the rarity of his live engagements and the limited release of his recordings here. Solal had only played New York four times over the last four decades, but now he's celebrating his recent 80th birthday with a whole week of shows at the Village Vanguard.
