Design for the Other 90%

The exhibit Design for the Other 90% showcases affordable objects aimed at the 90% of the world's population who often lack the means to purchase even the most basic goods. Many of the designs on display are meant to empower the poor, and help people recovering from natural disasters. Design for the Other 90% opens May 4th at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Exhibition curator Cynthia E. Smith joins engineer Martin Fisher of KickStart International, and Ron Rivera of Potters for Peace.

It was interesting that your discussion on the Cooper Hewitt exhibit was followed by and ad for a lecture at The Cooper Union, the original home of the museum. I believe our founder Peter Cooper would have been pleased by this exhibit, given his interest in improving the lot of common people.

By the way, originally the Cooper Institute was a school of design for respectable females.
