I am an amateur historian and cartridge collector. I would like to ask Mr Dalrymple if he could verify his statement that the British actually used lard (pig fat) on the Enfield cartridges (the cause of the Delhi uprising). The religious leaders who were strongly anti British were the ones who made this accusation. I would think that a wax such as bees wax was used to waterproof the cartridges. Lard or any animal fat would quickly spoil in the heat rendering the cartridges useless. My friends who collect cartridges agree with me. I would be most interested in his reply.
