Rare Diseases

Thursday, July 28, 2005

Today, as part of our Underreported series, we’re going to take a look at rare diseases. Ever heard of a LAM? Most people haven't. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease in which an unusual type of muscle cell grows in the tissue of the lungs, and eventually blocks the airways, and blood and lymph vessels. The disease most often strikes women of childbearing age, and is often misdiagnosed. We’ll talk to Abbey Meyers, the founder and president of NORD, The National Organization for Rare Disorders, and Amy Farber. Amy was diagnosed with LAM this past April.
