A Look at Choreographer Merce Cunningham

« previous episode | next episode »

Thursday, December 11, 1997

Merce Cunningham had many fans – including many dancers – who raved about the avant-garde dancer and choreographer because of the way he revolutionized modern dance, creating works of pure movement – divorced from not only storytelling, but musical accompaniment. He died at the age of 90. Leonard Lopate spoke to David Vaughn, who worked as the Company's secretary and the author of a biography of the choreographer and dancers Viola Farber and Kimberly Bartosik about Cunningham's work in December, 1997.
