Seldes discusses a book of letters between J.B. Priestly and his wife Jacquetta Hawkes that exhibits the two sides of American civilization in the Southwest. Hawkes lived with the Pueblo Indians during this period, while Priestly lived a city, what he called "the long thin empire of the internal combustion engine." [He does not name the book but it seems likely that it is "Journey Down a Rainbow."]
This leads to a general discussion of modern life then on to advertisements and of the foreseeability of the future.
