Jazz Loft Jam Sessions

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Hear extended jam sessions from within The Loft in this one-hour special, Jazz Loft Jam Sessions.

The Jazz Loft Project Radio Series has presented private recordings, most of which were never meant to be heard by audiences. With this in mind, consider the following question in the comments section:

How do you feel listening to musicians jamming in sessions that were not meant to be heard by an audience? Do you think these jam sessions sound different from performances or recordings?

The above jam session features Zoot Sims, Bill Potts, and Ronnie Free.

Watch Loft regulars Ron Free, Dick Katz, Bill Crow and Teddy Charles reunite for a jam session in WNYC's Greene Space.

My friend, the late David Nolan, who I knew from my days at WBAI-FM in the 1980's, turned me on to this project and program on February 18, 2010. He was the audio man at an evening forum about this very project in Tribeca that night. We had not seen one another in a good ten years, but I was in town for a few weeks, and he knew that I was a lover of Jazz music. I also knew that he was one of those New York people 'in the loop' and who would be close to VERY HIP and interesting scenes such as this. And this project and radio program, he had told me, would be a historic and a cultural eye opener on so many levels. David, it turned out, was right about that. Plus, he had just gotten hired at this radio station, and he was eager to get started there. He was among the best audio engineers in the city, but he was gone one week later, having died of a heart attack. This program is worth a listen to me, and will be worth a listen to many more people no matter their musical taste. But there is also the personal connection of a cool guy turning me on to a cool program that enriches, and that leaves a lasting positive mark.

Wow.. for an amateur Jazz Historian this is the cats ass. To know what the creaking DOOR sounded like really puts you right there. Amazing. Why no effort to save this building I wonder?
