This week Alec talks with Andrew McCarthy – about making movies, directing and what it’s like to reinvent oneself as a travel writer. Most people know McCarthy for his roles in "St. Elmo’s Fire" and "Pretty in Pink" – as a member of the “Brat Pack" -- but those movies were only one stop on Andrew McCarthy’s journey.
Almost 20 years ago, McCarthy discovered that traveling the world was the perfect antidote to the fame and exposure that came with his acting career. He has spent much of the last decade writing about his experiences in distant and exotic lands. McCarthy talks with Baldwin about his new book, called The Longest Way Home: One Man's Quest for the Courage to Settle Down.

What a wonderful, entertaining host Alec Baldwin is. He asks, listens, and adds to each session in the most wonderful way.
Thank you for this gold mine!
I love love this show. Funny what you can discover by listenning to the wonderful insights that Alec manages to get through his interviews. This guy is smart but oh boy does he come across with a huge ego! Feels like he is one of those who like to listen to the tone of their voices...
I enjoyed The Longest Way Home very very much. I felt like I was right there on all the treks, particularly, the dangerous ones. I loved the climb up Kilimanjaro. That may have been my favorite part. I leared so much from this book. I am so glad I bought it.
Andrew, I can hardly wait to buy your next book. I wish you my very best in all your future endeavors be it writing or acting.
I'm an enormous fan of your show. I absolutely crave your interviews. I was soooo confused while i was listening to this interview. In addition to being brilliant, your gift is that of connecting with people. MCarthy makes that virtually impossible. You made a comment, wonderful early on about what a great team you'd be for a movie: he directs, you produce..he barely acknowledged the statement. He sounds like an erudite ass to be honest.
He spoke about his father and that they had a cordial relationship. I wonder if that's why he seems to have such a hard time being warm, personable, and connective...perhaps he has a major layer of protection on; heavy armor.
He's clearly smart, but how is that compelling if he's less than human seeming? He seemed untouchable. I was so disappointed b/c i've always enjoyed his acting. Although now come to think of it, he tends or tended to play parts where he never fit in, had a hard time connecting..go figure.
And his insistence that he must travel alone otherwise the trip is about the relationship between the person you're with and not the experience..wow. I found that so sad! How about the pleasure of enjoying the experience with someone you're connected to?
Uyh-not a fan of his!
You however, are relentlessly fantastic.
The download link does not work! I wanna here it!
This file/interview will not play or download.
This file does not seem to play for Andrew McCarthy; Paula Pell's runs fine.
Will listen to Alec read a shopping list - love love love the show: but McCarthy?
Put me in mind of that classic commericial Where's The Beef?
Unlikely he'd resurrect in Act II as a writer if he didn't have the Brat Pack pedigree.
Please stick with subjects who match your conversational prowess: Billy Joel and you should be on Broadway together.
Wow. I loved this. For a couple years I saw him at school pick up and he was so reserved and quiet. To hear him talk about the love for his wife and family was touching. It really picks up in the second half. I'm surprised to see people slagging him. Great interview.
Interesting interview! Thank you Alec for sharing it on HERE'S THE THING! Always look forward to hearing these!
I usually love these interviews but this is the first one I turned off before it was over. I think it's a combination of never being a fan of Andrew McCarthy and the pitch of his voice. He always seemed such a whiner in the movies.
Love listening Alec, my favorite bad boy actor, talking in this, friendly style to famous people. So-o-o interesting! Alec is asking interesting questions -- questions we all like to hear. Keep on doing it Alec, I'm your fan.
interesting, but sort of rambly and hard to follow. mccarthy's speech pattern is not exactly easy to listen to. he talks a bit too fast, and lacks rhythm in his conversational delivery.
This lad is something else I'm sure he's lovely man and a great actor etc etc But I read what this fella had to write about the Irish and their attitude to money and misery. Mate just cause you spent your summer holidays doing a tour of Ireland and bought some land does not mean you understand who we are and what we are going through. And for the record the term "Paddy whakery" is highly offensive so as much as you seem to know/guess about our social, economic, and political landscape please lay off the the racial stereotypes.
I have watched several interviews with Andrew McCarthy as he promotes his new book. I have to say Alec Baldwin's interview was probably one of the best. He has a way of bringing out unique elements as the interview goes on. That is because he is listening and interested, himself,in what his subject has to say.
Excellent exchange of dialogue and insight. Thank you Alec for keeping your finger on the media pulse point of humanity. It's uplifting.
Excellent interview and I'm happy to hear that another book is in the works. The Longest Way Home is a terrific book. Loved the comments about travel writing/Paul Theroux's advice around 22 minutes.
Wow, haven't seen McCarthy in a film since that Weekend at Bernies tripe. Wish he'd do more acting now that he can say no to a bad script.
