Sure, Zach, what isn't heroic there.
A social climber, dishonest and manipulative is such a hero. Yiddish with it literature of course didn't speak to Jewish people and Poles of course don't have great literature. For an American communist, English, the language of empire and ladies and "gentlemen" "spoke" exactly when those few Yiddish speaking people who survived needed all the help they could have ... didn't got it.
Our hero was to busy promoting "The Merchant of Venice." No decency, no scruples, just pure ambitions and scoundrelism.
Illiterate, pretensions, primitive crowd without any concept of ethics worshiping scoundrels.
Great Story! Joe Papp is definitely one of my NYC heroes.
