This is a great piece! However, I disagree with the claims that very few people know the lyrics and that virtually no one knows the bridge, melodically or lyrically. I made my professional debut in the musical FOREVER PLAID, which I performed three of the four roles over a period of three years. One of the highlights of the show was "Heart and Soul," during which, of course, we'd bring a sometimes reluctant audience member up to play along. It was, I admit, because of this show that I learned the lyrics to the tune, but I would see audience members singing along or mouthing the words as we sang every single time we performed it.

It's a wonderful tune, and I think it's bittersweet that it lives on in partnerships at the piano keyboard: sure, people remember the "A" section of the tune, but they usually play it badly, then inadvertently switch to playing "Chopsticks."

Thank you for posting this. My eight year old daughter Skyler was playing Heart and Soul tonight after Thanks Giving dinner. As she played my mother the piano teacher and her teacher commented "all the kids play that song". I never looked up the discography of the song and always assumed the song was as old as Jesus. What a delight to know that it's a Loesser/Carmichael song and that it actually has lyrics. I can't wait to play the video for Skyler tomorrow. Thank You, you are St. Cecilia.
