As a fan of the original 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the only thing more disappointing than the White House Cantata recording is Mr. Garland's somewhat snide commentary on this broadcast. The White House Cantata is to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as Tang is to orange juice -similar flavor, but not at all the same thing. That given, Mr. Garland's continued "appraisal" of the original show based solely on the cantata recording is ill-informed at best. It is particularly unfair to lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, whose work was written for an entirely different medium, and is judged out of context. A little research would have been in order -along with an open mind.
