Blue Pipa

Saturday, January 26, 2008

In addition to her educational outreach and lectures, Min Xiao-Fen performs with her unique pipa, guitar and double bass trio, Blue Pipa — an instrumental combination that crosses musical boundaries from traditional Chinese music to Jazz, Bluegrass and beyond. Ms. Min has also performed in operas by Philip Glass and Tan Dun, in addition to her appearances with ensembles as diverse as The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. A frequent collaborator with other modern artists, she was featured in two tracks on Björk's recent CD release, Volta.

Beautiful! I haven't heard Pipa music in a long time. Also, I thought you handled the language issues really well in the interview.

Just hearing Ms. Min say Pipa is a treat. It might be interesting to listeners to point out the tonal qualities of the word.

Also, could you have Ms. Min say her own name on the air? Native English speakers never get it quite right...
