Since emigrating to the US in the early 90s, Chinese-born pipa player and vocalist Min Xiao-Fen has worked with contemporary artists ranging from Björk to John Zorn. Based out of Queens, NY, Min is also the founder of Blue Pipa, Inc., a non-profit organization that promotes experimental multi-cultural music, including jazz, film and theater works from around the world.
In addition to her educational outreach and lectures, Min Xiao-Fen performs with her unique pipa, guitar and double bass trio, Blue Pipa — an instrumental combination that crosses musical boundaries from traditional Chinese music to Jazz, Bluegrass and beyond. Ms. Min has also performed in operas by Philip Glass and Tan Dun, in addition to her appearances with ensembles as diverse as The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. A frequent collaborator with other modern artists, she was featured in two tracks on Björk's recent CD release, Volta.
