    Alfonso the Wise

One of the great musical patrons of Medieval times, Alfonso X (a.k.a. "The Wise") brought Jewish, Islamic and Christian scholars, scientists and artists together in his court — creating a 13th-century cultural "think tank" that has remained unrivaled since.

Cantigas de Santa Maria

We hear selections from the most famous work to come out of Alfonso's court, the "Cantigas de Santa Maria," which celebrates the Virgin Mary through accounts of miracles and hymns of praise. Consisting of 420 poems written in troubadour fashion with Medieval notation, the "Cantigas" is the largest collection of songs and music to survive the era.
