Weimar Kabarett

Wednesday, November 07, 2007

This is the era that defines Berlin Cabaret: a brilliant flash of artistic adventurousness before the oppression of the Nazi regime. Ute Lemper presents the original stars of that era and plays recordings from leading modern interpreters of the repertoire.

I just want to say that every time I've turned on WNYC this week in the evening, I've been both surprised and delighted each time, to hear Ute Lemper's gorgeous voice. Her comments have been so insightful into understanding the music she speaks about, and the fact that she has sung some of it- I am thinking of the Seven Deadly Sins, Lust, - really gives me the feeling that hers is a much deeper understanding of the music as well. Wouldn't it be great if she could host a show more often? Thank you for bringing both Ms. Lemper & Berlin into my home and car this week! Very refreshing indeed.

After the little musical tease at the beginning of tonight's "Kabarett" show, I thought we would certainly hear some of the records of the Comedian Harmonists, who were the top musical act in Germany and the rest of Europe from 1928 until they were restricted and then purged by the Nazis in the early 30's. But not a word about them. What a disappointment!

Queen Ute Lemper is the femme fatale of

    Cabaret Music & a true avant-garde artist.

I was in Berlin twice & every time I've left part of my heart & soul there.

What a fantastic city. Nice people are living there. For me it's "the city": The Utopia.

Germany must be rediscovered & puzzled over again & again & again...Just focusing & studying the music history in Germany will take more than a lifetime.

    Ich Liebe Berlin & Deutschland.

    Cheers.

    Hamid.

The stunning internationalist, gifted, well-read, polylingual person Uta showed herself to be made it hard to focus on all on the great music she brought to the airwaves. From Buenos Aires to Los Angeles ("Alabama Song", Berlin is alive everywhere she imagines it to be.

Please bring Uta back! She brings so much joy to the show! I have never heard her music but I love her speaking voice, and her personality! What a doll! Can she make a few more guest appearances?

As a Weill/Lenya enthusiast,I listened all week to Ute Lemper's hosting of the Evening Music show back in Nov. 2007, during Berlin without Walls celebrations. I continue to listen again and again from your archives online. What I would LOVE is if you would offer on CD her whole week's show (her hosting comments, plus all the program music that she played that week). It would be lovely to listen to it away from my computer. And I agree with the other listeners who said please bring her back to your programming. She's wonderful.
