Steel Concerto

Sunday, August 19, 2007

Composer Sasha Matson describes himself as a musical "halfbreed," with "one foot on the mountain, and one foot in the gutter." Tonight we sample his eclectic work with his triple concerto for steel pedal guitar and strings, "Steel Chords."

Steel Chords

Matson says he owes a musical debt to The Grateful Dead, whose psychedelic Celtic beat inspired the rhythmic impetus for "Steel Chords." A California native, Matson also imbues his music with a sense of the wide-open regional landscape of his heritage.
