The 2007 American Music Festival officially kicks off tonight with an assessment of the American musical scene from artistic consultant Robert Spano. Also, David Garland presents an introduction to some of the music that will be talked about and heard in depth during the coming week.

Conductor Robert Spano has specialized in reaching new audiences with new repertoire as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The three-time Grammy award winner weighs in with a survey of the American contemporary scene. Also, George Preston talks with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas about American concert music and its groundbreaking composers.

WNYC and NPR Music team up to bring you this live webcast from the Prospect Park Bandshell, which pairs indie rock sensation Deerhoof with the progressive Metropolis Ensemble. Presented by Celebrate Brooklyn! and Wordless Music, and hosted by David Garland, the program features an ambitious re-imagining of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, The Rite: Remixed.
