    Creators at Carnegie

“Creators at Carnegie,” from NPR, will be the evening’s feature. Tonight: Making Music by John Adams—four recent compositions by America's most popular contemporary composer, performed at Zankel Hall

The last hour of Evening Music is dedicated to the music of (in his own words) that “first-class second-rate composer,” Richard Strauss, who was born on this day 140 years ago. Self-deprecation aside, we’ll treat ourselves to some glorious vocal music: “Zueignung” (Devotion) and the “Vier Letzte Lieder” (Four Last Songs), courtesy of bright-voiced soprano Lucia Popp.

Our mix continues with an early (and rarely-heard) keyboard work, the last of his “Five Piano Pieces.” Glenn Gould makes for a fitting soloist in this little Straussian tribute to J.S. Bach. We’ll bring the evening to a rollicking close with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as they perform the delightful Waltzes from “Der Rosenkavalier” (The Knight of the Rose). Happy Birthday, Richard!
