Van Cliburn Concert Pianist - 8-part series featuring performances from the Ninth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (CBS Broadcast International, BMG Home Video, CBS International)

    Featuring Van Cliburn

Featured this evening: legendary pianist, Van Cliburn, winner of the first Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1958) and honored in the U.S. by an international competition bearing his name.

Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23 in F Minor, familiarly known as the “Appassionata,” a work described by Alan Rich as one of “total tragedy,” receives an impassioned reading by Van Cliburn during our first hour. For a cheerful change of pace, we bring you Aaron Copland’s Duo, performed by flutist Alexa Still and pianist Susan DeWitt. Copland’s birthday is tomorrow (1900), and Music from Copland House under the direction of Michael Boriskin—along with other musicians—will present a live concert of Copland’s music at the synagogue where he celebrated his bar mitzvah. Check it out!
Dvorák’s 1875 Serenade for Strings became one of the most popular string orchestra works composed in the 19th century. Myung-Whun Chung leads the Vienna Philharmonic strings as they illuminate its charms for us during the evenings second hour. A miniature Dvorak song follows: mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena sings “In the sweet power of your eyes,” accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson.
