Many people used to ask Aaron Copland how "a nice Jewish kid from Brooklyn" grew up to canonize the sound of American cowboy music. Copland himself enjoyed pointing out a family connection, explaining that his grandfather used to run a store in Dallas — where one of his early employees was Frank James (brother of Jesse, that is). We hear Copland's first foray into the genre with his ballet about another infamous wild west individual, "Billy the Kid."
