« previous episode | next episode »

Tuesday, December 23, 2008

For centuries, composers have set this matins prayer response for Christmas to music. We hear several versions of "O Magnum Mysterium" tonight, from the Renaissance (Tomas Luis de Victoria) to the modern (Morten Lauridsen and Francis Poulenc). Also, cello music by Philip Glass and Alberto Ginastera, plus Leonard Bernstein's grand symphony "The Age of Anxiety."

Also Featured Tonight:

Johannes Brahms / "Unbewegte laue Luft," Op. 57/8
Alfred Schnittke / Piano Quartet (Composed w/ Mahler)
Cesar Franck / "Psyche"
Ned Rorem / The Santa Fe Songs
Lou Harrison / Seven Pastorales

I was listening around 730 and heard a piano piece "something something Number 4", by Luciano somebody I think.

It was great, what was it?

Thanks

I'm with Faith. Is there a playlist eventually?

There were 4 O magnum's I heard -- Victoria, ?????, Jakob Handl, and Palestrina. (Faith, you might mean the Jakob Handl one, that was the one Terrance mentioned having sung in Glee Club).

But the 20th Century one after the Victoria I'd never heard, and I ran home to try & look it up. I thought Terrance said the composer's name was McRae? I can't find it on the web, so I may have mis-heard the name...

Help!

I tuned in during the choral piece you played just before the Palestrina Magnum Mysterium. What was that? I would love it if WNYC offered a contemporaneous playlist. Thanks!
